Assertions Analysis #12 + Reflection
Nathaniel Hawthorne is stating that words that are in the dictionary are powerless. In addition, he is saying that words have no effect on anybody when they are in the dictionary. However, once you start putting words together then they start to receive power. When someone knows how to combine those words then they could be used for good and evil. According to Jonathan Edwards in "Sinners in the hands of an Angry God" he uses diction to get the congregation emotions going. The words that he uses are powerless in the dictionary. But he decided to combine some of the words and make a sermon out of it. This meant that now his sermon has power and could effect the people. Therefore Sinners at the hands of an Angry God was more effective through the use of specific words.

Assertion Analysis #11
The Puritan preacher Thomas Watson is using water with a ship as a metaphor towards their people and their riches. He speaks about water is useful and helps out the ship. However, if the water gets into the ship then it becomes a bad situation. In comparison to People and their riches, if people get riches its useful. However, if the riches get to the heart of man then greed steps in. Then they are drowned by riches and greed. The natives have a different belief about riches. The natives dont even believe in riches and dont even care about it because its irrelevant.
