Assertions Analysis #12 + Reflection

Nathaniel Hawthorne is stating that words that are in the dictionary are powerless. In addition, he is saying that words have no effect on anybody when they are in the dictionary. However, once you start putting words together then they start to receive power. When someone knows how to combine those words then they could be used for good and evil. According to Jonathan Edwards in "Sinners in the hands of an Angry God" he uses diction to get the congregation emotions going. The words that he uses are powerless in the dictionary. But he decided to combine some of the words and make a sermon out of it. This meant that now his sermon has power and could effect the people. Therefore Sinners at the hands of an Angry God was more effective through the use of specific words.

Assertion Analysis #11

The Puritan preacher Thomas Watson is using water with a ship as a metaphor towards their people and    their riches. He speaks about water is useful and helps out the ship. However, if the water gets into the ship then it becomes a bad situation. In comparison to People and their riches, if people get riches its useful. However, if the riches get to the heart of man then greed steps in. Then they are drowned by riches and greed. The natives have a different belief about riches. The natives dont even believe in riches and dont even care about it because its irrelevant.

Assertion Analysis #10

I think that Jefferson is saying that the government would be best off when they are not doing anything. In addition, when the government isn't doing anything that gives the people the power to take care of business. He believes that the government would be better if the people ran it because it is saying that are country is not involved in making decision. Therefore, the people would be getting more power of decision. This quote is influential in the development of America because later on this concept is put in the by laws of this country.

Author Assertions #9

When Black elk speaks about the coming of the white man, he is preaching that before those people came they were happy and fine. The white man came with his standards and expectations but the Natives do not follow the same rules. He feels that the earth was bountiful and a blessing to them. The white men calls it the wilderness but the Natives call it home and nature. Black elk shows the difference    in the standards and rules between the two. He is expressing his feelings and his opinion.

Assertion Analysis #8

The Native americans feel that they are all one web. This statement includes the trees, earth, themselves and everything else. They are very careful about the earth and the nurture of it. Chief Seattle states that the earth is very sacred. The native americans do not abuse the materials that are given to them from mother earth. All things in this world are connected and they are just a strand of the web. They are also grateful for the life that they are given by their God. A life that is connected to everything and a life that has compassion for equality for all.

Assertion Analysis #7

The indian removal has been a decision made by President Andrew Jackson because of the expansion of the colonies. There is a common difference between the Colonists and the Native Americans. The Colonists believe that the Native Americans in fact couldn't live with a civilized society. The Natives do not live by the colonists way of life. So the Colonists are trying to force them to remove themselves from the land that they use to own. The Colonists feel that their superior over the Natives. The reason the colonists are removing the Natives is because of the knowledge they gain from their habits. They feel that the Natives aren't civilized and couldn't live with the colonists.

Assertion Analysis 6

Chief Red Cloud is stating in his quote that him and his legacy rather be left alone then been given riches and material things. He feels that he wants to train his children right. Therefore, he feels that the white man wont raise their children the right way. He states that he wants peace because the white man is trying to control them and to convert them to their ways. Also he uses the word "Love" because the true meaning of it is to giving the best for someone even if it doesn't concern you. The White people are    doing the best for themselves instead of the indians. There is no true love in this relationship between the indians and white man. The riches wont blind them from the true master plan that the white man has. The plan is to have full dominance over the Indians. He wont give in into their plan to take over the indians.

Assertion Analysis #5

There is a lot of adversity between the Native Americans and the White Man. The natives are being forces to believe in the Religion of the Puritans. However, the Puritans have harsh rules and want the Natives to submit to their authority. Sitting Bull is expressing his hatred of the white man and also the defiance towards them. He feels that the great spirit made him in his body for a reason and his plans and goals that were set for Mr. Bull shouldn't be affected by the white man. He doesn't want to be controlled by another race and is showing resistance. They strongly believe in their rights and even said they would die for them. Basically the Natives don't want to have anything to do with the White Men! Sitting Bull feels that the white men should respect the Natives and not force anything on them.

Asertion Analysis #4

I feel when george carlin makes a statement that it's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it, he is expressing the reality of what america really is. He compared the dream with being asleep and believe. As you can see he is using diction when he says "to be asleep to believe it" because when someone is asleep their dream isn't real or can become real. This dream that he talks about couldn't be achieved through reality but through fantasy. America is becoming a country of debt and a country that promises one thing and does a whole different thing. The dream we have looks very compelling however we get challenged when we have to face reality. Majority of this country has a dream and barley anything actually get to live that dream. Therefore, We must look at this dream when we are asleep because most of the time it wont be achieved in realty.

Assertion Analysis #3

I feel like John Steinbeck was trying to convey to the people that this country was never a socialism country. Since, the people feel in their minds that they are going to be millionaires however actually being used to be the working class by those who are!  The reality is that the people in America are being used to make this country but not credited or showcase by those who they work for. So i feel his idea of American people being exploited is true because there are hard working people that don't get the same amount of finances as those who don't work as hard.

Assertion Analysis #2

The point that Malcolm X is trying to convey in this quote is that people are not truly living in a society where everyone is free, but chained by the words and actions of the people. He proclaims that people and even himself is victim of America. When he uses that word victim it expands from just someone who was harmed to a people that are being down-class from society. He uses many words of diction in that quote. Another one is nightmare, when people came to this country many expressed this country to be a free nation however for the black man or colored; it was not a free nation. So instead of the Colored people having a dream they have to live in this nightmare were they are the victims. So his tone and diction really take this quote from just being a regular quote to a quote with passion and determination to pursue freedom.

Assertion Analysis #1

I feel like the speaker is declaring with this quote that there are two different views for America. The first one is the view of America's reality and the second is the view of the American Dream. If you look at society today we strive for a great dream for our country. However if you look at life today there is a big difference between the two. Life right now in America is a cover up for everything bad that's happening in society today. Many Problems in America have been taking place ever since this country has first started. The dream for America is a society that is free and that everyone is equal and fair chance. However if that is true, why is Latinos and African American's not having the same chances as the rich white child. We as a people have made this segregation by our hatred towards others and even ourselves. So if we want to see a new America or fulfill the dream we must see a new mindset for people in America.
